On August 12, 2012, Los Angeles Electric 8 returns to Sundays Live at LACMA to premiere two newly commissioned works by Los Angeles composers Derrick Spiva Jr. and Felix Salazar.
Spiva’s Neuron Speak is the first completed composition in a series of commissions by Los Angeles Electric 8 that celebrates the upcoming centennial of Igor Stravinsky’s seminal masterpiece The Rite of Spring (1913). Spiva describes Neuron Speak as "a musical representation of communication between neurons on the levels of the individual, body/mind, and collective consciousness."
Joining Los Angeles Electric 8 for Salazar’s Río de Porciúncula is special guest The Los Angeles Trombone Collective. Written for eight trombones and eight electric guitars, Río de Porciúncula is inspired by the once abundant source of water turned flood control channel presently known as the Los Angeles River.
The hour-long program also includes music by John Cage, Lou Harrison, Steve Reich, Dmitri Shostakovich, and more.
